General information only, not legal advice. For specific questions, consult a South African attorney familiar with the Consumer Protection Act.
Before you join any company, you should be able to check it yourself. Here is how to do that for APLGO.
What the law says
South Africa's Consumer Protection Act No 68 of 2008, Section 43, separates legal network marketing from illegal pyramid schemes. Income must come primarily from selling real products to consumers, not from recruiting new participants. Our full legal guide explains this in detail.
Three tests you can apply
- Would anyone buy the product without the opportunity? Ask customers who are not distributors why they buy it.
- How much income comes from product sales and how much from recruiting? Ask for an income disclosure, and read the APLGO compensation plan guide with real numbers in front of you.
- What happens if you stop recruiting? In a legitimate business, reorders from customers keep generating sales.
How APLGO lines up
This is our own summary as an APLGO distributor network. It is not a legal opinion, and no regulator has certified it.
- Real products: plant-based wellness lozenges such as NRM, GRW, SLD, RLX and GTS.
- Entry cost: the once-off R375 activation, paid when you are ready to order at member prices. You can also buy at retail without registering.
- Compensation: several bonus types, listed in the compensation plan guide.
- Company checks: APLGO operates in South Africa through independent distributors and the APLGO back office. As with any company, check its registration with the CIPC before you join.
Who to ask
The National Consumer Commission enforces the Act, the CIPC registers companies, and the Direct Selling Association of South Africa is a voluntary industry body.
